Top questions about weightlifting and fitness

Hello, everyone! As an Olympic medalist and the President of the Latvian Weightlifting Federation, I often get asked a variety of questions about weightlifting. In this post, I’m answering 10 of the most common ones to help anyone curious about this incredible sport or thinking about starting their journey in weightlifting.

What is weightlifting, and how does it differ from other strength sports?Weightlifting is an Olympic sport that focuses on two main lifts—snatch and clean & jerk. It’s different from other strength sports like bodybuilding, where the goal is aesthetics. In weightlifting, the primary aim is lifting the maximum weight with precision and power.

Are weightlifters really just big and bulky athletes?
Not at all! Weightlifters come in all sizes due to weight categories, which ensure fair competition. During my career, when I became a champion, my weight was about 135 kg—strong and athletic, not just big!

Is weightlifting a good option for people who want to lose weight?
Absolutely! Weight training boosts your metabolism and helps burn calories even after your workout. It’s one of the most effective ways to build a strong and athletic physique.

Is strength training safe for non-athletes?
Definitely! With proper technique and guidance, strength training is safe and offers tremendous benefits for overall health and fitness.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start weightlifting?
The first step is to find a coach who can teach you proper technique. Focus on mastering the basics before worrying about heavy weights. A strong foundation is key to long-term success.

What’s the key to perfecting weightlifting technique?
Stability and precision are essential. It all begins with the correct stance and ends with efficiently channeling your power through the lift.

Is weightlifting suitable for women?
Of course! Women who lift not only increase their strength but also improve their physical form and confidence.

What kept you motivated when things got hard?
I always reminded myself that every workout brought me closer to my goals. And when motivation waned, I’d remember—Olympic medals don’t lift themselves!

Have you ever broken a barbell?
Almost! But no barbell has dared fail me yet—they must be scared of my strength!

Is weightlifting a good date idea?
Absolutely! No one will ever forget a first date where I clean and jerked 250 kg—love powered that lift!
