Luge in Latvia traces its origins back to the Soviet era, but it wasn’t until the country’s independence in the early 1990s that the sport truly began to flourish under the national banner. The construction of the Sigulda track in the 1980s provided a foundation for Latvian lugers to train and compete at a world-class level. After Latvia’s independence, the Latvijas Kamaniņu Sporta Federācija was established to organize and promote the sport at both the grassroots and professional levels. Early successes came through participation in regional competitions, but it was the national commitment to luge, with structured support and investment in young athletes, that laid the groundwork for future international recognition.

Since the 1990s, Latvia has risen to prominence in the global luge scene. The Sigulda track, renowned for its technical demands, became a breeding ground for top-tier talent. Latvia's reputation was solidified by athletes like Mārtiņš Rubenis, who won Latvia's first Winter Olympic medal in 2006, and the Šics brothers, who earned multiple Olympic and World Cup medals in doubles luge. The Federation’s focus on youth programs and innovation in training has maintained Latvia’s standing among the world’s best in the sport. As new generations of athletes emerge, Latvia continues to be a formidable force in international luge competition, with its athletes consistently ranking at the top in both individual and team events.
